WAMATA

Giving families affected by HIV/Aids a chance to support themselves

WAMATA Group

WAMATA Group

The huge increase in the HIV/Aids pandemic has affected thousands of families in Tanzania. WAMATA is a community based group that provides invaluable help and support to some of these families in the Meru region.

Group Organisation

It is run by a group of local people, who have been prepared to learn about counselling, testing and education of people living with HIV/Aids.

Their main activities are:

  • Education and awareness of the community
  • An outreach programme to support vulnerable families

"Helping 100 Grandparents"

Eliekunda & Family Outside Home

Many of the vulnerable families include grandparents caring for orphaned children. Margaret and Garrie were touched by the tremendous strength of these devastated grandparents and decided to launch “Helping 100 Grandparents”. For as little as £100 we can give a family the means to sustain itself, for example; buy a goat, farming implements/seeds etc or sewing machine for tailoring, and buy school uniforms for primary school children. Our aim is to work with the WAMATA outreach workers and identify 100 of these destitute families and give them the means to support themselves.
